Open to: Grades: 12, 11

Credits: 8

Terms: Full year course

This program is for students considering a career in the criminal justice field. It offers a wide variety of experiences and exposure to many exciting professions. These include police, probation, corrections, game wardens, attorneys, judges, EMS, detectives, and crime scene investigators. This course gives a sampling of a full criminal justice program allowing the student to decide what career paths they may wish to pursue.

During the first half of the year, students study the role of a police oficer, Constitutional law, and report writing. Through field trips they receive exposure to the courts, witness a trial, and meet the various positions that make up the criminal justice system. Additionally numerous guest speakers provide an interesting introduction to unique subjects. For example, speakers discuss topics such as the public defender, special weapons and tactics, explosive ordinance, Internet and computer crimes, and much more.

The second half of the year challenges students with more advanced police procedures. These include motor vehicle stops, criminal investigations, fingerprinting, responding to major incidents, interviewing techniques, officer safety, and courtroom testimony.

This program has developed new and exciting relationships allowing students the opportunity to attend the Vermont Police Academy's part time school, while at the same time receiving a second part of their police certification through the Career Center.

Additionally students wishing to enter the CJ field will learn how to develop an affordable career plan, and how to best market themselves. Students will complete a hiring plan, personal portfolio, and have experienced a practice job interview.
